Global covenant of mayors for climate and energy

The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy is an international alliance of cities and local governments with a shared long-term vision of promoting and supporting voluntary action to combat climate change and move to a low-emission, resilient society. It is the broadest global alliance committed to climate leadership, building on the commitment of over 9,000 cities and local governments from six continents and 127 countries representing more than 784 million residents. Citieswithnature

CitiesWithNature provides a shared platform for cities and their partners to engage and connect in this space, working with a shared commitment towards a more sustainable urban world with nature. It is a unique initiative that recognises and enhances the value of nature in and around cities. CitiesWithNature is brought to you by founding partners ICLEI, The Nature Conservancy and the International Union for Conservation, along with supporting bodies such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and other international partners. Visit the global CitiesWithNature website.

Pacific Cities and islands

The towns and cities of small island and archipelago-based nations are often overlooked by international urban resilience policies and programs due to the small populations involved. However, these cities and towns are some of the most vulnerable, diverse, and rapidly growing urban centres anywhere in the world, acting as crucial gateways to sustainable development for the citizens of small island developing states.

Emissions Reporting & support

ICLEI Oceania has partnered with C40 Cities, Ironbark Sustainability, and the City of Melbourne to support Paris Agreement-aligned climate action across metropolitan Melbourne. The City of Melbourne is one of eight cities globally in C40’s Climate Action Planning Pilot Programme, which is focused on building leadership, commitment and capacity to develop climate action plans that align with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

National Consultation on the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy Framework for Local Government Climate Action in Australia (2019)

ICLEI Oceania received funding from the European Commission through the Strategic Partnerships for the Implementation of the Paris Agreement (SPIPA) to develop options for aligning national and state government climate responses more closely with the GCoM framework.

Global Programs

Green Climate Cities

The GreenClimateCities (GCC) Program offers cities a proven process methodology for walking step-by-step toward climate neutrality. This methodology and its associated Measuring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) framework were tested by the cities engaged in the Urban-LEDS project. See also ICLEI’s Climate Neutrality Framework

Sustainable Mobility

With 55 percent of the world’s population living in urban areas, urban mobility is a major factor affecting quality of life. Today, cities are experiencing unprecedented changes in transportation that are driven by social, economic and technical trends. Through the Sustainable Mobility agenda, ICLEI supports its Members to provide access to safe, affordable, accessible, resilient, low-emission and sustainable mobility systems to create livable cities that fulfill the mobility needs of all.

The 100% RE cities and regions network

Local and regional governments worldwide are setting renewable energy targets. This shift is a critical means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, create jobs and enhance community resilience through decentralised energy production. The 100% RE Cities and Regions Network accelerates the renewable energy transition by bringing networking, peer learning, technical guidance and the latest renewable energy research and findings to participants.

ICLEI Circulars Platform

From raising awareness and political momentum on the urgency of shifting away from unsustainable consumption and production patterns to designing policy approaches that address concrete challenges, ICLEI Circulars supports the ICLEI network in the transition to sustainable cities and to accelerate local and regional government action on city-region food systems, procurement and more with training, policy guidance and technical expertise to its participants. Our combined knowledge and experience allows us to provide advice, support and publicity to any public authority that wants to implement sustainable and innovation.
